"When colour falls away what remains is essence, the structure and the emotion of the story."

The phrase "Every picture tells a story" was created in 1902 - long before Rod Stewart brought it into popular culture with his song. It was featured next to an image of a person clutching their back. Why?  It was an advert for pain killing medicine!

So while the world is full of excellent photographs of everything from architecture to wildlife with subjects leaping out of the screen in stunning technical perfection,  my favourite images are ones that go beyond the initial wow factor and tell a story.  

All good stories trigger emotions. The stories can start with what is present in an image,  some can even begin with absence - what is not there. Some images may infer an obvious narrative, others may be more abstract and let you form your own.  

Monochrome is great for story telling because when colour is stripped away, what remains is essence, the structure and emotion of the story. 

Best viewed slowly. Look for  small details and wonder what the story might be or make up your own. Enjoy and please send me any comments you have.
